American Post, a leading fancy for the Vodafone Derby, has just three rivals in his French 2000 Guineas prep race at Longchamp tomorrow.

Khalid Abdullah’s colt faces Blackdoun, Andre Fabre’s Diamond Green and the Aidan O’Brien-trained Antonius Pius in the Group Three Prix de Fontainebleau.

American Post already has two wins at Longchamp to his name with the second coming in the Group One Prix Jean Luc Lagardere (Grand Criterium) last October.

The son of Bering went on to add the Racing Post Trophy at Doncaster to his tally and earn a rating of 117 in the International Classifications.

He limbered up for Sunday’s mile test by working over that distance on the Les Aigles’ gallop at Chantilly on Tuesday morning.

Antonius Pius failed to do himself justice when beating just one home in the Dewhurst Stakes last autumn, after winning the Railway Stakes at the Curragh while Diamond Green was unbeaten in three starts last season, including the Prix la Rochette.

Last year’s top-rated European juvenile Bago was taken out of the race by trainer Jonathan Pease after the colt picked up a minor infection.

The son of Nashwan, unbeaten in four starts at two, will now head straight for next month’s French 2000 Guineas.

Also on Sunday’s card nine fillies put forward their cases for the French 1000 Guineas in the Prix de la Grotte.

Pascal Bary’s Denebola heads the list after her win in the Prix Marcel Boussac last October.

The Niarchos family-owned daughter of Storm Cat will be ridden by Christophe Lemaire in the mile race.

Later on the card, O’Brien runs recent Curragh winner Esperanto in the Group Two Prix Greffulhe.

The Sadler’s Wells colt won a 10-furlong maiden earlier in the month but steps up significantly here to tackle one of the main French Derby trials.

A total of eight go to post including Day Or Night who will be representing Pease.
