Gunmen opened fire on a convoy of civilian cars in the northern Iraqi city of Mosul today, killing a foreign security guard.

A US military spokesman said there were no other casualties in the drive-by shooting. Witnesses earlier said two foreigners were killed and another was injured.

The attack occurred in the centre of Mosul. American troops sealed off the area after the attack, witnesses said.

Insurgents have targeted civilian foreigners involved in reconstruction in Iraq. In an attack in Mosul in March, assailants killed four American missionaries who were working on a water project.
