A number of people were also knocked into the sea by the blast, but all six crew members were recovered and treated by emergency workers.

The explosive was believed to be a Second World War mine or bomb, frequently unearthed in the Netherlands.

Two helicopters and three ships from the navy and marines went to the scene to assist, along with another fishing boat.

The accident occurred 60 miles off the port of Ijmuiden.
