Rains flooded out roads in a southern Indian state, and the waters washed away a bus today, killing at least 14 people, an official said. Another 34 people were feared drowned.

The bus driver was trying to get through rushing floodwaters in the Ramnathapuram district of the Tamil Nadu state when the vehicle carrying about 75 people was swept away by the strong current, said P. Krishnamurthy, an official in the district office.

The bus ended up in the Sanavali River, about 370 miles south-west of Madras, the state capital, he said.

Rescuers had so far pulled 14 bodies from the water, and 25 people were found alive. But authorities said as many as 50 people may have drowned.
