Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu made his name with 21 Grams, and in Babel (Paramount, €24.99) he teams up with screenwriter Guillermo Arriaga to produce a heady and somewhat baffling work.
Brad Pitt, Cate Blanchett and Gael Garcia Bernal head a large cast which seeks to connect four events (in four languages) around the world with a gun.
Quite what Inarritu had in mind is difficult to fathom as the film is weighed down by Arriaga’s meandering script.
But Babel still holds the viewer’s attention, even if the reason is partly to do with trying to second guess the director’s intentions.
The two-disc version comes with a decent 90 minute documentary.
