Doctors managed to save the life of an unborn baby after his mother was killed in a road accident.

Maria Herrera was eight months pregnant when she was hit by a car on a crossing in New York.

Her four-year-old son and 16-year-old sister also died in the incident. The baby boy survived the birth but is in a critical condition.

The driver of the car was an off-duty policeman.

He has been arrested on suspicion of drink-driving and suspended from his job.
