The Hitchiker’s Guide To The Galaxy star is staging a demonstration in Edinburgh to persuade politicians including US President George W Bush and British Prime Minister Tony Blair to cancel Third World debt, double the aid budget and rewrite global trade laws so developing countries can protect their economies.

He is also teaming up with Love Actually writer Richard Curtis again for a romantic-comedy called The Girl In The Cafe, which will be broadcast on TV around the world during the G8 Summit, as part of the Make Poverty History campaign.

He explains: "The eight men who sit around the table at the G8 Summit could literally save hundreds of millions of lives, but whether they choose to do it or not remains to be seen.

"Bob Geldof wants one million people to surround the G8 Summit building in Scotland and I'll be there. Flights are already booked.

"It infuriates me because 30,000 children die in Africa every day because they have no food. If this was happening on a different continent we wouldn't dream of leaving it for a few days, but because it's happening in Africa, apparently it's all right."
