Kavanagh savours victory at Madison Square Garden

Irish light welterweight Jamie Kavanagh marked his professional debut with a TKO win over American William Ware at Madison Square Garden last night.

Trainer Freddie Roach was in the corner of Dubliner Kavanagh, 20 later this month, as he floored Ware twice before the fight was stopped after one minute and 39 seconds of round two.

Victor Ortiz confirmed he is a force to be reckoned with in the light welterweight division as he won a unanimous decision against veteran Nate Campbell.

The Ortiz fight was second on the bill to Amir Khan's WBA world title defence against Paulie Malignaggi, with Khan having named his fellow 23-year-old as one of the big guns in his sights in the 140lb division.

Ortiz dominated the contest from the first bell on the way to scoring a 100-89 win on two of the judges' scorecards and 99-90 on a third.

Campbell was given a standing count by referee Earl Brown at the end of the first round when he looked to have been pushed over after taking a right hook.

However, it went down as a 10-8 round and the busy Ortiz did not look back.

Breidis Prescott, the Colombian-born fighter who sent Khan to the first defeat of his career in 2008, moved up from lightweight to welterweight and bounced back from a December defeat to Kevin Mitchell with a third-round stoppage of American Jason Davis.
