Michael Schumacher has taken pole position ahead of the Canadian Grand Prix later today in Montreal, finishing almost half a second faster then the next closest driver.
Despite missing some of the practice sessions earlier in the week, Schumacher secured the fastest time in the qualifying session this morning.
He is joined on the top row of the grid by his younger brother, Ralf, who is driving for the Williams team.
Schumacher’s closest rival for the driver’s championship, David Coulthard, was third fastest while Jarno Trulli in the Jordan will start in fourth place after Coulthard just outpaced him in the dying minutes of the session.
Rubens Barrichello starts in fifth and Oliver Panis is in sixth.
The Jordan test driver, Ricardo Zonta will line up in 12th spot after he had to deputise for Heinz-Harald Frentzen who was injured in an accident in practice earlier in the week.
Eddie Irvine will start in 15th place on the grid in his Jaguar as he failed to build on his third place finish at Monaco recently.
