Shots have been reported in a building on the Washington Navy Yard campus, an official has said.

Navy spokesman Petty Officer 1st Class Pedro Rodriguez said that a lockdown is underway.

The Navy Yard, in south-east Washington, is the country's oldest naval installation.

A heavy police and fire department presence begins blocks away from the Navy Yard, with roads blocked off and a helicopter hovering overhead.
