Poc Fada returns to Ravensdale

The All-Ireland Poc Fada hurling event will take place on Saturday, August 4, at 12.30pm, it was announced today.

The All-Ireland Poc Fada hurling event will take place on Saturday, August 4, at 12.30pm, it was announced today.

The traditional contest will once again take place on the 5km Annaverna Mountain Course, situated in Ravensdale, Co Louth.

“We want to ensure that the 2007 M Donnelly All Ireland Poc Fada will once again be a truly competitive and enjoyable one,” said Donie Nealon, chairperson of the National Poc Fada Task Force.

There will once again be 12 hurlers competing for the trophy and medal.

The field will include the various provincial Poc Fada champions, as well as some of the GAA's top hurlers.

Former winners Albert Shanahan (Limerick), Davy Fitzgerald (Clare) along with current all Ireland Champion Brendan Cummins will face the 5km mountain course.

They will be joined by Brendan Mc Namara (Clare), Keith Carr (Galway), John Grealish (Galway), Shane O Connor (Offaly), Pat Mulanny (Laois), Graham Clarke (Down), Jason Mc Manus (Fermanagh) and James Skehill (Galway).

The All-Ireland Camogie Poc Fada contest will take place on the day also.

Mary Hendry from Westmeath will be back to defend her title. Other contestants will be Lyndsey Condell (Leinster), Jane Adams (Rossa), Patricia Jackman (Munster), Caitriona Daly (Connacht), Pam Nugent (London), Laura Mc Guiness (Armagh) and Louth’s Catherine Magee.

“Poc Fada is now an important event in the Gaelic games calendar and the camogie players see it as a hugely prestigious competition to participate in,” said Camogie Association president Liz Howard.
