Soccer: Ross has shown the way forward - Numan

Rangers wing-back Arthur Numan insists that the club must, at least, take the performance of Maurice Ross as a silver lining from their Old Firm defeat.

Rangers wing-back Arthur Numan insists that the club must, at least, take the performance of Maurice Ross as a silver lining from their Old Firm defeat.

The Light Blues saw Celtic open up a 10-point gap and defender Michael Ball and manager Dick Advocaat square up after the former Everton man’s 72nd-minute substitution.

Ball will learn his own fate today after the spat with the Ibrox boss which saw the player swear at Advocaat as he left the field.

But Dutch international Numan maintains that the display of Ross, who was also praised by Advocaat after the game where he was a late replacement for Fernando Ricksen, proves that the fans should have faith for the future.

‘‘I was very pleased with the performance of Maurice,’’ Numan told the club website.

‘‘It must be very difficult to be thrown in unexpectedly and be asked to make your Old Firm debut at Parkhead but he did a very good job.

‘‘Bobby Petta is a very difficult opponent but he did excellently well and all the credit must go to Maurice because, although he is young, he showed what a good player he is and what a great future he has in the game.

‘‘Having said that, it won’t come as a big surprise to everyone because he has played some other games this season big games like the second half of the away leg in Fenerbahce and did very well. I’m happy for him.’’

But Numan has warned the rest of the team that they cannot afford to feel downhearted with the CIS Cup quarter-final at Ross County ahead tomorrow night.

‘‘The important thing now is to concentrate on Ross County and then Dundee on Saturday,’’ said Numan.

‘‘They are vital games and then, of course, it is Paris Saint Germain which will be a chance for us to maintain our interest in Europe.

‘‘It’s always difficult when you wake up the next day but we have to pick ourselves up from the canvas, regroup and come out fighting the next time.

‘‘When we lost to Celtic at Ibrox it sparked what was a great run for us, winning eight games and drawing another one in a tremendous nine-game run.

‘‘We can’t allow all that good work to be undone just because of one result, no matter how disappointing. We need to get back on track.’’

Meanwhile, England international Ball will discover whether he still has a future at Ibrox today.

Dutchman Advocaat opted to replace Ball with Peter Lovenkrands who scored their only goal of the game when they fell two goals behind to Celtic.

But the England international reacted furiously to the decision.

Advocaat now insists he will make the 22-year-old wait until today to find out whether he has a future at the Govan club.

‘‘I have not seen Michael yet,’’ said Advocaat. ‘‘I will see him and we will talk about what happened but our discussions will remain between each other.

‘‘I will talk with him and then it’s up to him after that.’’
