Evander Holyfield remains on course for another crack at world title glory after beating Hasim Rahman on a technical split decision in Atlantic City.
The bout, an eliminator for the IBF crown currently held by Lennox Lewis, was stopped during the eighth round due to a head injury suffered by Rahman.
Following an accidental clash of heads in the fourth round, Rahman’s forehead above his left eye became grossly swollen and the contest was prematurely brought to a halt on the advice of the ringside doctor.
Due to the nature of the stoppage, the decision went to the judges’ scorecards, with two having Holyfield ahead by 69-64 and one favouring Rahman by 67-66.
