Nine Irish crews to compete in second leg of Rowing World Cup
The Irish rowing team embark on the second outing of their international season tomorrow when they take to the water in the second of the three leg Rowing World Cup Series at the Bosbaan regatta course in Amsterdam.
Four senior crews are joined by five Under-23 crews who are using the regatta to gain valuable experience for the upcoming World Under-23 Championships in Scotland at the end of July. More than 750 rowers from 43 countries will compete in a total of 20 events over the coming weekend.
Irish team manager Mick O'Callaghan said: "We've put in some solid work since Linz at our base in Inniscarra at the National Rowing Centre with all the crews. This weekend is another good opportunity to see where we stand as we build towards the World Championships. We're participating and targeting an improved performance this weekend from our senior boats."
On the senior side of the squad the men's lightweight four (LM4-) of Paul Griffin, Richard Archibald, Eugene Coakley and Cathal Moynihan, along with heavyweight single sculler (M1x) Sean Jacob will not race this weekend, head coach Harald Jahrling opting to rest both crews. The men's heavyweight quad (M4x) did not travel either due to minor injury.
The heavyweight four (M4-) of Martin, Casey, O'Neill and Folan will be intent on repeating their notable performance of three weeks ago when they won the 'B' final (7th overall). The quartet would even hope to steal a place in the coveted 'A' final (top 6).
Ireland's top female lightweights; Sinéad Jennings and Niamh NiCheilleachair in the double scull (LW2x) are confident of an improved performance this weekend in their highly competitive boat class.
