In the Commons today, Shadow foreign secretary William Hague will demand that there is a hearing with the power to summon officials and military commanders for questioning.

Shadow defence secretary Dr Liam Fox told GMTV: “We want the principle established that there must be an inquiry.

“It’s about making sure we don’t make the same mistakes again.

“People want to know that our sacrifices haven’t been in vain.”
