A number of investments are on the way for Cork in the coming months which will provide a jobs boost for the region, according to the IDA chief executive Sean Dorgan.
He was speaking in Cork today at a breakfast briefing hosted by Cork Chamber.
Mr Dorgan said that there were investments lined up for Cork in the near future, but didn’t comment further on the industries involved.
He pointed to the significant investments of overseas companies in Cork in recent years as evidence that the region was viewed as a good location.
“In the past ten years, jobs provided here by overseas companies have increased 60% from around 12,000 jobs to over 20,000 today. There is a good pipeline of investments due for Cork in the coming months that will create a boost for the local economy.”
He referred to the pullout of Amgen in Carrigtwohill as a major disappointment but said that the IDA still took the view that the plans were postponed as opposed to being cancelled.
“We’ll continue to stay with Amgen and in time things may come right.”
He also dismissed the idea that Cork needed to establish an embassy in Dublin to allow the county to be closer to decision makers in Government and the media.
The suggestion was made last week by the president of University College Cork (UCC), Dr Michael Murphy.
“Cork already makes a significant impact so I don’t see the need for that.”
