A post-mortem examination carried out on the gunman suspected of a suspected killing spree in France showed he suffered some 20 bullet wounds, although only two were fatal, officials said today.

Judicial and police officials said Mohamed Merah, 23, was killed by a bullet wound to the left temple and another to the abdomen.

They said the other injuries were mainly to his arms and legs.

Merah, who claimed links with al-Qaida, is believed to have killed seven people in three attacks in and around Toulouse.

He died yesterday in a gunfight after a 32-hour stand-off with police who said they fired in self-defence.
