A Serbian man who eats steel has decided to retire after choking on a bike pedal.

Branko Crnogorac - who has consumed 25,000 light bulbs, 12,000 forks and thousands of vinyl records - was attempting to eat a whole bicycle over three days as part of a bet, but he ended up in a severe condition in hospital.

He said: "I almost died. Doctors at the same time found two kilograms of assorted ironware in my stomach, including two gold rings.

"So after 20 years of eating everything, I've realised my digestive system is not as strong as it used to be, so I've decided to retire."

Branko's obsessive 60-year eating career - which has also seen him polish off 2,000 spoons and 2,600 plates - began when a friend suggested he ate sand to calm down an acidic stomach ache.
