Davis off to a flyer

England’s Brian Davis picked up where he left off last week when the American Express world championship began in Atlanta today.

The Londoner went into the record books with a 10 under par 62 on Sunday at the Home of Golf – the Old Course at St Andrews – and made a sparkling birdie on the first hole of the Capital City Club Crabapple course.

Bunkered off the tee at the 452-yarder, Davis hit his second to 16 feet and made the putt.

He nearly made it two in a row, lipping out from over 30 feet on the second, and after also parring the next was one behind his playing partner Loren Roberts, the American opening with putts of seven and 15 feet.

Davis is best remembered in the States for his sensational start to the US Open in June. He pitched in for eagle at the first and birdied the next three to be five under par.

Behind him today Welshman Phillip Price followed into sand off the first tee - and then found another bunker with his second. He saved par there, splashing out to less than a foot, but paid the price for wildly missing the fairway on the next.

His second went left into rough and, left with a chip over sand, he failed to get up and down and slipped to one over.
