Britney Spears has lost out to Gareth Gates as he held on to his number one slot in this week's UK top 40.

Britney's new single, I'm Not a Girl Not Yet a Woman, was the highest new entry to the singles chart at number two.

But Gareth's debut single, a cover of Unchained Melody, held on to the top spot for the third consecutive week.

Will Young slipped to number eight in the charts with his debut single and former number one Anything is Possible/Evergreen.

But it was bad news for Staines bad boy Ali G.

Revelations of the Queen Mother's impressions of the star failed to boost sales for the his debut single Me Julie, which slipped two places in this week's chart to number four, behind Shakira in third place with Whenever Wherever.

In the album charts Celine Dion held on to the top spot with A New Day Has Come despite the poor performance of the title single which slipped five places this week to number 20.

Darren Hayes, lead singer for Australia pop band Savage Garden, had the highest new entry in this week's top 40 albums with his debut album Spin pushing Nickelback down to third place with Silver Side Up.

There was also bad news for Ronan Keating, whose new album Ronan entered the charts at a lowly number 33.
