Parts of the country without broadband will know later today if they are included in a new government scheme to provide them with the service.
Communications Minister Eamon Ryan will also to outline the timeframe for the roll-out.
More than 10% of the country is still without broadband and as such considered disadvantaged.
The areas affected are mostly rural with low population and at risk of remaining economically disadvantaged because of the prohibitive commercial cost of providing broadband there.
The government's National Broadband Scheme aims to break that cycle though.
It has signed a deal with telecoms provider 3 to bring broadband to those areas and also provide wholesale access to other operators who wish to serve premises there.
Ryan is to announce details of the scheme later this morning
