A Cambodian woman has died of bird flu, becoming the first confirmed victim infected outside Vietnam in an outbreak that has killed 13 people in the past month.

The 25-year-old woman died in a Vietnamese hospital and tests today confirmed she was infected with the H5N1 strain of the virus, said Phan Van Tu, a doctor at the Pasteur Institute in Ho Chi Minh City.

Relatives had reported dead poultry in her village and her younger brother died last month with similar symptoms.

The woman from Kampot province was treated at a local Cambodian clinic before transferring to a Vietnamese hospital.
