Ireland's Athens track team has been reduced just 11 participants after discus thrower Nick Sweeney today pulled out through injury.

The 36-year-old, who was in line for a fourth games, has a suspected ruptured tendon in his left knee. Sweeney picked up the injury three days ago in training.

The Wall Street analyst said: "It's a mature decision following cosultation with the OCI medical officer. It was my only option really."

The Dundrum athlete threw 64.12 metres at a Boston meet on July 4 to belatedly make it onto the Athens team.

He has been ranked inside the world's top ten three times throughout his career. The highlight being a bronze at the World Student Games in 1993.
