Madonna to defend herself on Oprah

Madonna is to appear on Oprah Winfrey's American chat show to defend her controversial adoption of 13-month-old Malawian David Banda tomorrow.

The pop queen, 48, will discuss her decision to adopt the child, and contest the latest reports from Banda's biological father, Yohane, who claims he had no idea he was sending his son "away for good" when he signed the adoption papers.

Yohane, 32, reportedly believed Madonna and husband Guy Ritchie would only be raising and educating his son before bringing him back to Malawi.

A spokesman for The Oprah Winfrey Show says: "You've read the headlines, heard the rumours and seen the photos. Now, for the first time, Madonna speaks out with her side of the story on the adoption controversy."
