An earthquake with preliminary magnitude of 7.1 hit near Guam this morning, the Japan Meteorological Agency said.

The quake was centred near the US territory of Guam at 11.09 am (0309 BST), the agency said in a statement, citing information provided by the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre in Honolulu, Hawaii.

The agency issued no tsunami warnings, but it said there may be a chance of tsunami near the epicentre.

An official of the PTWC said, however, the quake probably did not create a tsunami saying the centre has not received any reports of tsunami.
