Deery strike does it for Derry

A typical long-range strike from midfielder Kevin Deery, however fortuitous, booked Derry’s passage through to a meeting with CSKA Sofia in the third qualifying round of the Europa League next week.

With the score tied at 1-1 from the first leg in Riga, Deery broke the deadlock of a tight game on 57 minutes when ending a run with a speculative 35-yard shot which Latvian goalkeeper Germans Malins misjudged and allowed to drop into the net at his far post.

Derry travel to Sofia next Thursday, with the return leg back at the Brandywell the following week.
