Centre Marius Joubert became only the second player in Springbok history to score a hat-trick of tries against the All Blacks as the hosts kept their Tri-Nations hopes alive with a 40-26 victory at Ellis Park today.

The Springboks scored five tries to three to earn the first bonus point in this year’s Tri-Nations and give themselves a chance, along with Australia, of snatching the title from New Zealand in the final game of the competition in Durban next weekend.

Both sides need to win with a bonus point to deny the All Blacks.

In winning, the Springboks also erased their longest ever losing streak - eight in a row – against their traditional rivals.

South Africa went 10-0 down early on. But Joubert scored twice in the first half and added the final try of the game to see his side home.

All Black full-back Mils Muliana opened the scoring after he was quick to break from a turnover ball, brushing off an attempted tackle by Breyton Paulse and then weaving himself through forwards Os du Randt and John Smit to sprint over.

The Springboks finally got onto the scoreboard in the 18th minute when Joubert scored after Joe van Niekerk broke from a five-metre scrum to send his midfielder through the tackle of Tana Umaga.

A Muliana mistake allowed Montgomery to send Paulse away for the try to bring his team within a point – and then De Wet Barry broke Marty Hollah’s tackle in the 22metre area to give Joubert his second.

Montgomery’s conversion left the hosts six points up at the break.

The visitors struck again quickly after the break, winger Joe Rokococo’s pace taking him past the cover to score.

Andrew Merhtens edged the All Blacks ahead by a point with the conversion before the two kickers swapped penalties to go into the last quarter a point apart at 26-25.

But Jean de Villiers dived over and score to restore the Springbok lead, and Montgomery took the margin to seven points by adding another penalty.

Then Joubert made the most of his chance when the ball popped out of a tack into his hands, jinking in and out to score next to the posts.

The try, and Montgomery’s conversion, allowed the Boks to go beyond the seven point margin.
