Troubled rock star Peter Doherty was in police custody again tonight after being arrested on suspicion of administering a noxious substance recklessly.
The Babyshambles frontman is due to be questioned by police investigating pictures published in a national newspaper showing the singer allegedly injecting a drug into a girl fan’s arm.
He was arrested on a street in east London at 8am today and is currently being held at Stoke Newington police station under Section 23 of the Offences Against the Person Act.
A Scotland Yard spokesman said: ``At 8am this morning a man aged 27 years old was arrested on a street in an east London borough on suspicion of administering a noxious substance recklessly.
“He is now in custody at a police station and inquiries continue.”
Police began their investigation after seeing the image of Doherty, published in The Sun newspaper, holding a syringe as the girl lies apparently unconscious on a kitchen floor.
The Sun said the photograph was taken at Doherty’s home in Hackney, east London, within the past five weeks.
Another picture shows Doherty jabbing a needle into his tattooed forearm.
They also published a picture of supermodel Kate Moss, 32, who they claimed has been secretly seeing Doherty despite their apparent public split.
Doherty’s arrest today is the latest in a long line of run-ins with the law in the last few months.
Just over a week ago he was bailed after being arrested on suspicion of drug offences in east London.
He was held on suspicion of possessing class A drugs with intent to supply after police stopped a car in east London.
The arrest came just three hours after he was spared jail by magistrates after admitting seven counts of possessing controlled drugs including heroin, cocaine and cannabis.
District Judge Jane McIvor, at east London’s Thames Magistrates’ Court, instead sentenced him to a community order with two years’ supervision and 18 months’ drug rehabilitation. He was also banned from driving for six months.
She said the singer, already under a community order for previous drugs offences, was showing “significant signs of compliance and effort” in tackling his addiction.
His original community order was imposed by Ealing Magistrates’ Court in February after he pleaded guilty to seven charges of possessing illegal substances.
