Jailhouse Rock, based on the 1957 Elvis Presley film, is due to hit London’s West End in the spring as the latest in a long line of stage musicals based on successful films.
Alan Janes, co-author and lead producer of the venture, tells Daily Variety that the production will open in February in Plymouth and after a five-week tour of England will arrive in London where “three sets of theatre owners” are vying for the show, according to Janes.
The lead role of Vince Everett, the rock and roll singer with a prison background which is generally believed to have been Presley’s best role, is likely to be cast in the US, said Janes.
The music will couple Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller standards from the film-such as Treat Me Nice and the title tune - with bluegrass, spirituals and country music – “a whole mixture of different things,” he said.
