Nick Heidfeld must wait until the new year to learn if he has done enough to earn a race drive with Williams.
The German, who left Jordan at the end of last season, has tested for Williams this winter as he goes head to head with Antonio Pizzonia for the vacant race seat.
The former Prost driver is unlikely to be cast adrift at Williams no matter what decision is made, especially after some strong testing performances.
BMW engine boss Mario Theissen has hinted that Heidfeld will get a testing role should he not be chosen to partner Mark Webber in the race team.
“After his strong achievements we will not send him home,” he is quoted as saying by the German media. “It is important that the fastest one drives.”
Williams will announce Webber’s partner at a press conference in central London on January 6, a day before their new car and line-up are launched in Bahrain.
