Doctors were today trying to re-attach an eight-year-old boy’s arm after it was torn off by a shark.

The youngster was in the water along Gulf Islands National Seashore at Pensacola Beach, Florida, on Friday night when he was attacked, said National Park Service ranger J R Tomasovic.

The boy’s uncle wrestled the shark to shore, and another man prised open its mouth to remove the arm, Tomasovic said.

Once the arm was retrieved, the shark was shot dead by a park ranger.

The boy was taken to a hospital where doctors were trying to re-attach his arm.

His condition was described as critical.
