Police have made 14 arrests after National Front supporters staged a demonstration in Oldham.

A group were handing out leaflets in part of the town, hit by recent race riots, when police moved in.

Around 40 Anti-Nazi League supporters staged a rival demonstration in the area around Milnrow Road. Greater Manchester Police said there were some minor skirmishes.

A spokesman said the arrests were made after racist remarks were shouted but there was little violence.

The National Front have staged regular demonstrations in Oldham before and after the rioting last month, when hundreds of Asian youths clashed with police.

A delegation from the town last week met new Home Secretary David Blunkett to explore new initiatives to improve racial harmony in the town.
