Saudi Arabia’s ruler, King Fahd, died early today in a Riyadh hospital, according to an official where the monarch was being treated and an adviser to the royal family.

Saudi Arabia’s ruler, King Fahd, died early today in a Riyadh hospital, according to an official where the monarch was being treated and an adviser to the royal family.

“The king died early this morning,” said an official at the King Faisal Specialised Hospital in the Saudi capital, Riyadh.

Fahd was believed to be 82.

Saudi royal court issues statement saying King Fahd has died and his brother, Crown Prince Abdullah, has been appointed country’s new monarch.

“With all sorrow and sadness, the royal court in the name of his highness Crown Prince Abdullah bin Abdel Aziz and all members of the family announces the death of the servant of the two shrines, King Fahd bin Abdel Aziz,” said a statement read out on state-run Saudi TV.
