An elated Martin O’Neill, two-goal hero Jonathan Walters and Robbie Brady struggled to articulate their reaction to the Republic of Ireland securing qualification for next summer’s European Championships.
“Obviously I am delighted for the nation and I think we will have a big following going to France as befitting the occasion,” said the Irish manager.
“Irish supporters always turn out in great numbers and they were magnificent tonight. They kept us going. The last 15 minutes was a long time but we saw it through and we deserve to go to France.
“Mostly I’m delighted for the players as they have been absolutely fantastic. I couldn’t be more pleased and if they hold me in any regard well it is miniscule in the high esteem I hold them in. They have just been fantastic.
“I don’t know if it was the most complete performance of the group. I would have to look back at it again. We had to win the game tonight as that was most important. I think when you saw that Bosnia had three centre-forwards on towards that we had to defend for our lives.
“The second goal was terrific and it is a great old feeling to have secured qualification”.
Jonathan Walters struggled to keep his emotions in check when attempting to describe his goals and helping cement Ireland’s safe passage to the European Championships.
“Unbelievable, every single one of the players played their part in this,” commented the Stoke City stalwart.
“I’ve missed a few (penalties) in my time. But when they are there to be taken I’ll always step forward and put my hand up.
“Without a doubt we had a very tough group. Hopefully we can put right what happened at the last European Championships. We’ve got there and now the hard work starts.”
Man-of-the-match Robbie Brady was equally elated at reaching France along with a group of players whose team spirit played a major role in overcoming such a difficult qualifying group.
“Words can’t describe what I’m feeling right now,” admitted Brady.
“Growing up, you live for these kinds of days. Seeing these types of games on television over the years and now to get the team and country to where we want to be, at a major tournament, is beyond belief. I’m so proud of everyone involved.”
