Holland will be unable to host the Champions League final until they have a stadium with a 70,000 capacity, UEFA have told the Dutch Football Association (KNVB).
The KNVB nominated the Amsterdam ArenA, the biggest stadium in Holland, as a candidate for European club football’s 2010 or 2011 showpiece. However, they have now been informed the ArenA, with a capacity of 51,638 is too small.
Harry Been, secretary general of the KNVB, expressed his disappointment at the decision.
“If they would have told us sooner, the involved parties could have spared themselves the trouble,” said Been.
“The city of Amsterdam, Schiphol Airport and the Amsterdam ArenA all did their utmost to support the candidacy.”
