David Gillick looked sharp this morning as he negotiated through to tonight's 400 metres semi-finals at the 2007 European Indoor Athletics Championships in Birmingham.
The Dubliner, who took the title in Madrid two years ago, was the second fastest qualifier as he romped home to win the second heat in a time of 46.70 seconds. He had a split of 21.75 at the halfway mark.
Britain's Robert Tobin led the first heat home in 46.77, while Sweden's Johan Wissman (46.92) and up-and-coming German (46.08) also had heat victories.
Gillick, who was drawn in lane two, said afterwards: "I'm pleased to get round one out of the way. I just wanted to get through and save as much energy as possible.
"The lanes were a little tight so I was pleased with my time as well. It's good to have the show on the road."
The 400m semi-finals start at 6.05pm at Birmingham's National Indoor Arena.
