Dundee manager Jim Duffy will find out on Tuesday whether his move for Paul Gascoigne will get off the ground.
The 35-year-old, who has already rejected an approach from English Third Division club Darlington, is considering his options after a move to US side DC United fell through.
But Dens Park boss Duffy is remaining cautiously optimistic he can bring the former Rangers and England midfielder to Tayside.
Duffy told the Scottish Sun: "When I heard his move to America had fallen through, I phoned his agent to see about the possibility of Paul coming here.
"He told me Paul had a few offers on the table and is still to decide whether he is going to stay in the UK or go abroad.
"At least he knows, if he is staying in this country, that we are interested and I would say by Tuesday we will have a strong indication on Gazza's thoughts.
"No money has been talked about because there would be no point if he turns round and said he doesn't want to come.
"But at least we've registered an interest and it could happen."
But Gascoigne's agent, Ian Elliott, believes a return to Scotland could appeal to his client.
Elliott said: "We are trying to set up a meeting with Jim Duffy to speak to Paul.
"Without knowing the ins and outs of what Dundee are willing to offer, I know it is something that could appeal to Paul.
"He loves Scotland and nearly everyone in Scotland loves him.
"It really does depend on how well the meeting goes with Jim and what is on offer."
