The head of the Catholic Church in England and Wales has made history by preaching to the Queen.

Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O'Connor delivered the lesson during the service at St Mary's Church, on the royal estate at Sandringham.

He was the first member of the Catholic hierarchy to preach to the Royal Family in one of its own churches in 500 years.

The cardinal was also the first Catholic Archbishop of Westminster to stay with the Queen at Sandringham and preach the Sunday service.

The Queen and Duke of Edinburgh are in residence at Sandringham, Norfolk, for their annual winter break.

A spokesman for the cardinal said: "The fact it is the first time this has happened, that a member of the Catholic hierarchy has preached in one of the Queen's own churches and to the monarch since the Reformation, is a very significant event at the start of the 21st century."
