Ballad features among 11 for Sussex

Dubai World Cup winner Moon Ballad is one of 11 horses declared for the Sussex Stakes at Goodwood on Wednesday.

The four-year-old is one of two runners for Godolphin in the Group One event with Blatant also lining up.

But Moon Ballad will face stiff opposition from the Classic generation.

Zafeen and Kalaman, first and second in the St James’s Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot, reoppose for Mick Channon and Sir Michael Stoute respectively, and they are among six three-year-olds to take on their older rivals.

Aidan O’Brien will be double-handed with both Spartacus and Statue Of Liberty declared, and Roger Charlton runs impressive Criterion Stakes winner Trade Fair.

Norse Dancer, who disappointed badly last time for trainer David Elsworth in the Coral-Eclipse Stakes, completes the three-year-old contingent.

Former top South African horse Eventuail represents William Haggas, while Terry Mills fields last year’s Queen Elizabeth II Stakes winner Where Or When.

The latter met Hawk Wing at the top of his game when a distant second in the Juddmonte Lockinge Stakes, and finished fourth to Dubai Destination, who misses this race to wait for the Prix Jaques Le Marois, in the Queen Anne Stakes on his latest start.

“He’s flying at the moment. He was a bit unlucky catching Hawk Wing when he did because we beat three Group One winners by 10 lengths and still didn’t win,” Mills told the BBC. “He won’t mind a bit of cut in the ground.”

Richard Hannon’s Reel Buddy is the other older horse in the race, which is the first major all-aged race over a mile this season.
