Service to remember Clutha victims
A memorial service will be held today for the 10 people who died in the Clutha helicopter crash.
The ecumenical remembrance will be held for the victims will be held at 11am at St Andrew’s Cathedral in Clyde Street, Glasgow.
The service is being held four months to the day after the accident, not far from where the accident happened.
The service will be led by Archbishop Philip Tartaglia, the BBC said, while Deputy First Minister Nicola Sturgeon and Glasgow’s Lord Provost Sadie Docherty will attend.
Reverend Dr Laurence Whitley, who was the police chaplain at the crash scene, will give a reading at the service, during which a candle will be lit for each of those who died.
A Eurocopter EC135 police helicopter crashed into The Clutha bar, a popular Glasgow music venue, at around 10.25pm on Friday, November 29.
An accident report found both engines on the aircraft failed, sending it plunging through the venue’s roof.
The three crew on the police helicopter were all killed – pilot David Traill, 51, Pc Tony Collins, 43, and Pc Kirsty Nelis, 36.
Those killed in the pub were John McGarrigle, 57, Mark O’Prey, 44, Gary Arthur, 48, Colin Gibson, 33, Robert Jenkins, 61, and Samuel McGhee, 56.
Customer Joe Cusker, 59, was pulled from the wreckage alive, but died in hospital from his injuries almost two weeks later.
The accident report, released last month, found both engines “flamed out”, but it did not point to an exact cause of the crash.
