Forty-five days after the World Trade Centre was destroyed the rubble is still burning at temperatures as high as a thousand degrees.

US officials say it is because almost everything inside can serve as fuel, from documents to office furniture.

When the debris is moved it can also cause air pockets to shift and fresh oxygen causes hot spots to flare up.
