The European Union today called on Iran to live up to “clear obligations” made to the international community to allow international inspectors to see its nuclear facilities.
The 25-nation bloc added that it hoped UN talks this week would make progress despite the Iranian parliament’s threat to block inspections.
“We will be considering what the Iranian parliament said,” said Foreign Secretary Jack Straw.
“The government of Iran is a signatory to the non-proliferation treaty. It has got clear obligations.”
“This is not good news,” said EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana of the parliament’s approval yesterday of a bill requiring the government to block in-depth UN inspections of its nuclear facilities if the nation is referred to the UN Security Council for possible sanctions.
Solana said he still hoped for progress in talks on Iran’s nuclear program before key UN talks planned at the International Atomic Energy Agency in Vienna on Thursday.
