Soviet song team weigh up options

Connections of Sagitta 1000 Guineas fourth Soviet Song will bide their time before deciding on the next target for the filly.

Connections of Sagitta 1000 Guineas fourth Soviet Song will bide their time before deciding on the next target for the filly.

The James Fanshawe-trained Soviet Song, who was beaten four and a quarter lengths behind Russian Rhythm on Sunday, is owned by some 10,000 members of the Elite Racing Club.

Matthew Budden, club manager, said: “She’s come out of the Guineas really well.

“I haven’t spoken with James in depth about anything other than how she’s taken the race.

“She’s come out of it fine and was bouncing the next morning. There were no problems so we are delighted in that respect.

“She’s in the Irish Guineas, the Oaks, she’s in at Royal Ascot (Coronation Stakes), she’s in the Coral-Eclipse. She’s got plenty of options.

“It will be a case of having a good think and reflect on what’s happened and then make a decision where we go next. We won’t be rushing to make a decision.”

Soviet Song’s effort on Sunday delighted the owners and Budden went on: “She ran really well. I think the feeling was that perhaps it did come a little bit soon for her.

“They had a bit of a hold-up with the flu and things. I wouldn’t want to use it as an excuse or anything as it was an exceptionally good race. She did look to get a little bit tired towards the end.

“James has always said that this is the start of the season, not the end of it for her so hopefully we’ll have some good days with her somewhere.”

Soviet Song was one of last season’s leading juveniles when won all three starts including the Group One Meon Valley Stud Fillies’ Mile on her final outing.

“There was never much doubt given the work she was doing that she’s trained on so we are hopeful we’ll win something somewhere,” Budden said.

On breeding Soviet Song should get further than a mile in time.

“A mile looked about right on the evidence of Sunday,” Budden added. “There is a chance she will stay further and the mare stayed a little bit further and there is a fair bit of stamina in the pedigree.

“Her sire Marju was second in the Derby so we wouldn’t rule out that she might stay further but she didn’t look as though she was lacking speed on Sunday.”
