Hope fades in twin tower rescue operation

Hope was today almost gone that anybody could be found alive in rubble of the World Trade Centre.

Hope was today almost gone that anybody could be found alive in rubble of the World Trade Centre.

It has been one week since the last survivor was rescued.

Just five people were pulled alive from the collapsed remains of the twin towers last Wednesday and none since, leading New York’s mayor, Rudolph Giuliani to warn hopes can now only be faint.

The number of missing people last night climbed to 5,422, with just 218 bodies found at what is now known as ground zero, of which 152 have been identified.

Mayor Giuliani warned: ‘‘The chances of recovering any live human beings are very, very small now, given the amount of time and condition of the site. Those chances, however, are not totally ended or over.

‘‘We will still conduct ourselves as a rescue effort as well as a recovery effort but we do no have any substantial amount of hope to offer people that we will find people alive.’’
