The Aegean cruise ship that sank earlier this year killing two passengers after hitting rocks was relying on faulty official navigation maps, its owner claimed today.
Around 1,600 people, mostly American tourists, were evacuated from the Sea Diamond after the accident in April.
Operator Louis Hellenic Cruise today said it had commissioned a seabed survey of the area and found the rocks were not on official charts.
“The ship’s captain maintained a distance of 130 meters from the shore and should have been 57 meters clear of the rocks. But something very different happened,” said George Koubenas, head of operations.
