Britain to introduce resolution today

Britain’s UN ambassador Jeremy Greenstock is today expected to introduce a new Security Council resolution declaring Iraq in violation of obligations to disarm.

Britain’s UN ambassador Jeremy Greenstock is today expected to introduce a new Security Council resolution declaring Iraq in violation of obligations to disarm.

A spokesman for Tony Blair has said the council would vote on the resolution by mid-March.

Meanwhile France, backed by Germany, said it will put forward propositions to give weapons inspections more time.

Getting approval for the Anglo-American resolution, which would set the stage for war, will be a daunting task. Eleven of the 15 council members, including veto-wielding members France, Russia and China, want to see inspections continue.

French President Jacques Chirac’s spokeswoman Catherine Colonna said Monday that France would put forward new propositions later in the day to reinforce the weapons inspections.

Colonna said a new resolution on Iraq was “neither useful nor necessary” and that weapons inspections should continue.
