Falcons boss Rob Andrew named Wilkinson in the starting line-up, confident he had fully recovered from the shoulder/neck problem which required surgery and at one stage even threatened his star player’s career.

Wilkinson was hurt during Newcastle’s Zurich Premiership victory over Northampton three days after Christmas, and has played just 58 minutes’ rugby following his extra-time drop-goal that gave England World Cup glory with victory over Australia in Sydney last November.

During the 25-year-old’s prolonged absence, England have won just three out of eight Test matches, losing to New Zealand (twice), Australia, France and Ireland.

Wilkinson’s presence guaranteed considerable local interest, and weather conditions were kind, with bright early evening sunshine bathing the Galway Sportsground.

The Falcons also handed a debut to summer signing Colin Charvis – the Wales captain packed down at number eight – while Wilkinson’s opposite number, veteran fly-half Eric Elwood, made his 150th appearance in Connacht colours.
