A disturbance at a prison involving around 40 inmates has ended, police said today.

Emergency services were called to Saughton Prison, Edinburgh, when trouble broke out in an accommodation block at 3pm yesterday.

The Scottish Prison Service, who runs the jail, said no prison staff were involved in the incident, in which the inmates barricaded themselves into one section of the Hall, a remand wing of the prison.

A police spokesman today said the disturbance had been brought to an end at around 5.20am, when all inmates had been returned to their cells.

Lothian and Borders Police officers were brought in to take positions both inside and outside the prison premises, which are situated in the west of the city.
