A man who insulted Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe while arguing with his brother on a bus will be spending Christmas in prison.

Prosecutors said a Central Intelligence Organisation agent overhead Arnold Bunya, 29, telling his brother during the argument: “Do not be thick-headed like Mugabe.”

Under Zimbabwe’s sweeping security laws, it is an offence to insult Mugabe or undermine his authority

Bunya was allegedly unrepentant when challenged by the secret police agent and was arrested.

He was not asked to plead when he appeared in a Harare court yesterday and was remanded in custody until December 28.

In a similar case last month, unemployed Douglas Suangweme was jailed for eight months for describing Mugabe as a dictator, also while travelling on a bus.

The jail term was suspended on condition he complete 140 hours of community service and does not commit a similar offence in the next five years.
