An Irish missionary has accused the developed world of ignoring the plight of southern Africa, which is currently facing famine and an AIDS epidemic.

Mary Doonan, who works with the Medical Missionaries of Mary in Malawi, said the outside world is showing little interest in the situation, despite the fact that millions of people are facing starvation and death.

“The World Food Programme put an appeal out some months ago for the whole southern African region and to date, less than one-third of the food that we need has been pledged,” she said.
